Earn with Solar: Unlock the Power of the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG)

Imagine not only saving on your electricity bill but also earning from the surplus energy your solar panels generate. This opportunity is now available to Irish homeowners through the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG). This initiative, part of the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) policies, makes selling excess electricity back to the grid simple and rewarding.

What Is the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG)?

The CEG is a payment scheme that allows homeowners with solar photovoltaic (PV) systems to earn money for exporting unused energy to the grid.

By generating your own renewable energy and feeding it back into the system, you help reduce demand on the grid and make clean energy available to others. Your electricity supplier will pay you at a competitive market rate, which varies by provider, so it’s worth shopping around to find the best deal for you.

How to Sell Electricity back to the Grid?

Based on SEAI Homeowner Document, homes with PV systems that generate more energy than they consume can now export that excess to the grid and benefit from payment for that exported electricity. This payment is known as the Clean Export Guarantee (CEG) and is essentially a feed-in tariff. This tariff will be paid at a ‘competitive market rate’ from your electricity supplier. Each supplier will set their rates so you will need to contact your electricity supplier directly for details of their CEG rates.

To qualify for the CEG, certain requirements must be met.

  • Grid Connection: Ensure you have a proper export grid connection with ESB Networks.
  • Smart Meter: While SEAI grants don’t require a smart meter, it is necessary for precise payment calculations. Without one, payments are based on a deemed volume assumption set by the Commission for Regulation of Utilities (CRU).
  • Contact Your Electricity Supplier: Each supplier sets their own CEG rates. Contact them to confirm their rates and how payments are processed.

Please note that – you can still avail of SEAI grants for solar installations without a smart meter. However, having one is crucial if you wish to take full advantage of the CEG scheme.

Why Consider Selling Surplus Solar Energy?

Selling unused solar energy has significant benefits for both homeowners and the environment.

Financial Benefits:
It provides an additional revenue stream, as you earn money for energy that would otherwise go to waste. This can help offset your initial installation costs and add financial value to your home.

Environmental Impact:
By selling excess energy, you’re contributing to Ireland’s renewable energy goals, supporting sustainability, and helping reduce the nation’s carbon footprint. Every unit of clean energy you export helps further the transition to a greener, low-carbon future.

This opportunity is open to both new and existing micro-generators, provided the eligibility criteria are met. Whether you’re already a solar energy producer or considering making the switch, the CEG offers a compelling reason to invest in renewable energy.

SEAI Grants and Incentives

If you’re just starting your solar journey, in 2025, the SEAI Grant program offers up to €1,800 to help cover installation costs. While a smart meter isn’t required for the grant, having one allows you to maximize your financial benefits by accessing CEG payments and ensuring you receive the most accurate energy export calculations.
